                                                        The End

God bids us give our time and strength to the work of preaching to the people the messages that stirred men and women in 1843 and 1844. . . .

The Upward Look p 199

Because we live at this time, when the earth is at its worse day of activity and the law has been made void by the main stream of people, we have to face it and do all we can to warn others of the coming doom of the majority of life strewn over the earth.

The world is full of error and falsehood to no end.  We are to study for our self and know what the Lord really says.  The verse that is discussed here is-

Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

Colossians 2:17

This verse is often twisted and used to support error, and for rejection of truth.  But why not use it to support the truth?

When you have a shadow, there has to be an object to obstruct the light so it will cast that shadow.  The shadow can be at different places, depending on the time of the day if it is outside and where the light is, if it’s in the house.

In this verse the body, or subject and light is Christ.  Jesus is the Light of the world.  He is the center of all that is good and right. He came to share in mans lot of being in a sinful world, so He always was and is the center of the church, the subject for which to keep the mind on.  Jesus is the means of our salvation by shedding His blood, and He is also the light, shining the truth to the world, instructing us and warning and correcting us.

An example is of Jesus saying He is the Door of the fold of safety, through which we have to enter for salvation and eternal life.  But He is also the Shepherd who is taking care of His flock in the fold and those outside the fold and working to bring back those that have strayed as well as wanting to save the wicked.

In the plan of salvation the Lord has used types and symbols to make it easier for man to understand what He has done to make it possible for man to stop sinning and be saved and live forever.

As soon as man sinned, the lamb without blemish, was sacrificed to show that some day Jesus would die for our sins.  In all the history of the world, Jesus has been telling man of His plan of redemption.

We know when Jesus hung on the cross, no more lambs to represent Christ were to be slain.  Jesus was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.  Even after Jesus died on the cross, there were still symbols that He used to remind us of His death.  He did not throw away all types and symbols.  Only those sacrifices and ordinances that pointed to His death are no more.

Like the sun, casting shadows different places all through the day, before noon and afternoon, so Jesus casts His shadows before and after the cross.  The verse says, which are a shadow of things to come.  When Paul wrote this he was after the cross, still looking forward to the fulfillment of more shadows.

The previous verse 16 tells what some of these shadows are.

Let no man judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath days.

Everyone has the power of choice.  Man can decide to serve God or not to serve Him.  But God has written no idle words.  All is very important and has a purpose even if man has other ideas.

Paul is referring to Leviticus 23.

     Leviticus 23:1,2

“And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall Proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts.”

     Exodus 31:16

“Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.”

      Isaiah 66:23

“And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.”

God’s people will be keeping the Sabbath and the new moon in heaven so we should be enjoying them now and remember the meanings for these days.

Part Two

      Leviticus 16:29

“And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you:”

     Leviticus 16:31

“It shall be a Sabbath of rest unto you, and

ye shall afflict your souls, by a statute for ever.”

      Leviticus 23:21

“And ye shall proclaim on the selfsame day, that it may be an holy convocation unto you: ye shall do no servile work therein: it shall be a statute for ever in all your dwellings throughout your generations.”

      Leviticus 23:31

“Ye shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.”

     Leviticus 23:41

“And ye shall keep it a feast unto the LORD seven days in the year. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations: ye shall celebrate it in the seventh month.”

Notice it says, Feast of the Lord, not mans feast or ideas and the Lord says, My feasts, and they are holy.  It says forever.

Dictionary–perpetual:  Lasting for eternity, continuing and enduring forever, everlasting, ceaseless, ageless, eternal, unceasing, unending.

Daniel tells us what was nailed to the cross.

      Daniel 9:27

“And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease,.”

     Colossians 2:14

“Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;”

At the supper with the disciples Jesus said He would not drink of the cup until He drank it with them in the kingdom.  This tells us that the unfermented grape juice, which is a symbol of Christ’s blood, would still be a reminder of His death in the kingdom of heaven when sin is gone.  Jesus also told us to have the communion service with the grape juice and unleavened bread, and foot washing to show His death till He comes.  These symbols are still telling us of Christ’s death after the cross.

The week Jesus died on the cross, the first day of the feast of unleavened bread, which is a Sabbath, was on the same day as the Seventh day Sabbath.  This was the day Jesus was in the tomb, and so it had to be for Jesus to rest on the holy Sabbath day. The one was a memorial of the creation of the world and the other the memorial of redemption, or Jesus giving His life to save the righteous.

A high day, is when the Sabbath of a feast of the Lord takes place on the Seventh Day Sabbath.

     Leviticus 23:6

“And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread.”

     Leviticus 23:7

“In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.”

     Leviticus 23:8

“But ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD seven days: in the seventh day is an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.”

The Desire of Ages  PG  785

“Christ arose from the dead as the first fruits of those that slept. He was the antitype of the wave sheaf, and His resurrection took place on the very day when the wave sheaf was to be presented before the Lord.  For more than a thousand years this symbolic ceremony had been performed.

From the harvest fields the first heads of ripened grain were gathered, and when the people went up to Jerusalem to the Passover, the sheaf of first fruits was waved as a thank offering before the Lord.  Not until this was presented could the sickle be put to the grain, and it be gathered into sheaves. The sheaf dedicated to God represented the harvest.  So Christ the first fruits represented the great spiritual harvest to be gathered for the kingdom of God. His resurrection is the type and pledge of the resurrection of all the righteous dead. “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus, will God bring with Him. ”

1 Thessalonians 4:14

Jesus rose from the dead, in harmony with the first fruits.  At the end of the world we will see the dead come out of the graves.  This shows the first fruits did not end at the cross.  We are still waiting and longing for that day.

Part three

The unleavened bread was used for the whole week of the feast and there was to be no leaven found in their houses.  Jesus had no sin. Leaven is a symbol of sin.  We are still asking God to forgive and cleanse us of sin after the cross.

Unfermented grape juice is representing Christ’s pure blood, shed for us.  It was not spoiled at all, to be a symbol of Jesus body that saw no corruption.

      Advent Review and Sabbath Herald

                 June 22,1897  PR  11

“The broken bread and pure juice of the grape are to represent the broken body and spilled blood of the Son of God. Bread that is leavened must not come on the communion table; unleavened bread is the only correct representation of the Lord’s Supper. Nothing fermented is to be used. Only the pure fruit of the vine and the unleavened bread are to be used.”

     Leviticus 23:10

Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest:

     Leviticus 23:11

And he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, to be accepted for you: on the morrow after the sabbath the priest shall wave it.

      Leviticus 23:12

And ye shall offer that day when ye wave the sheaf an he lamb without blemish of the first year for a burnt offering unto the LORD.

Pentecost is representing the day God gave the law on Mount Sinai.  It was a day of teaching and instructing the people.

At the time of the assembled disciples on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was given and shown by tongues of fire on each persons head.  They were blessed with wisdom and understanding, how to share the plan of salvation and were given the ability to speak languages they did not know.

The Holy Spirit has been working on hearts through all the history of the world.  In the final days of this world, the Holy Spirit will be given in great measure to the faithful who have not one spot or stain of sin in their life, after the cross.

     Leviticus 23:15

And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete:

     Leviticus 23:16

Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the LORD.

     Leviticus 23:17

Ye shall bring out of your habitations two wave loaves of two tenth deals: they shall be of fine flour; they shall be baken with leaven; they are the firstfruits unto the LORD.

     Leviticus 23:21

And ye shall proclaim on the selfsame day, that it may be an holy convocation unto you: ye shall do no servile work therein: it shall be a statute for ever in all your dwellings throughout your generations.

     The Great Controversy [1888 edition]

PG  611

The work will be similar to that of the day of Pentecost.  As the “former rain” was given, in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at the opening of the gospel, to cause the upspringing of the precious seed, so the “latter rain” will be given at its close, for the ripening of the harvest. “Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord; his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.” [1 HOSEA 6:3.] “Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God; for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain.”[2 JOEL 2:23.] “In the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh.”

“And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”[3 ACTS 2:17, 21.] The great work of the gospel is not to close with less manifestation of the power of God than marked its opening. The prophecies which were fulfilled in the outpouring of the former rain at the opening of the gospel, are again to be fulfilled in the latter rain at its close. Here are “the times of refreshing” to which the apostle Peter looked forward when he said, “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out [in the investigative Judgment], when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; and he shall send Jesus.”

[4 ACTS 3:19, 20.]

The feast of trumpets started ten days before the Day of Atonement.  This was when the people were alerted, and it was kept before their mind that the Day of Judgment was at hand.

William Miller preached the soon coming of Jesus for ten years before the day of Atonement on October 22, 1844, sounding the trumpet of warning of the coming judgment, when Jesus went from the Holy Place to the Most Holy Place of the sanctuary. This was after the cross.

Just before Jesus second coming, He will step out of the sanctuary on the Day of Atonement.  The world will have been ALARMED IN TRUMPET TONES, with the Loud Cry Message, THAT THE END IS UPON US.  We are now looking for this final moment, we are yet in this world.

     Leviticus 23:24, 25

Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation.  Ye shall do no servile work therein: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

      Numbers 29:1

And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work: it is a day of blowing the trumpets unto you.

     The Southern Watchman

May 31,1904  PR  02

At the time of the feast of trumpets, when many were gathered at the holy city, the people assembled in the street that was before the water gate; “and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded to Israel. And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month. And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday. . . . And the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.”

Part Four

The Day of Atonement has always been the most important of the gatherings of Israel.  A person was cast out if He did not participate in this day.

We are still in this world of sin.  We are living in the anti-typical Day of Atonement, which are the years from October 22, 1844 to the day of atonement the year that Christ has planned to come, of which we know not.  When Jesus work in the Sanctuary is done, He will say “It is finished” and step out and in a few days He will reach this earth, to take His faithful to their heavenly home.

It will take seven days to go to heaven.  On the last great day of the feast, the saints will sit around the banquet table of the Marriage supper of the Lamb.  Jesus will serve the redeemed and each will partake of the grape juice with Him, that He said He would not drink until His people were in the kingdom.

We are being judged now.  We do not know when our name will be presented to the Father for examination to decide our destiny.

     Leviticus 23:27

Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

     Leviticus 23:28

And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the LORD your God.

     Leviticus 23:29

For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people.

     Leviticus 23:30

And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people.

     Leviticus 23:31

Ye shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

     Leviticus 23:32

It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath.

Testimonies for the Church Volume Two     PG  691

Many entertain the view that probation is granted after Jesus leaves His work as mediator in the most holy apartment.  This is the sophistry of Satan. God tests and proves the world by the light which He is pleased to give them previous to the coming of Christ.  Characters are then formed for life or death. But the probation of those who choose to live a life of sin, and neglect the great salvation offered, closes when Christ’s ministration ceases just previous to His appearing in the clouds of heaven.

Testimonies for the Church Volume Two   PG 190

“Jesus has left us word: “Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the Master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: lest coming suddenly He find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.” We are waiting and watching for the return of the Master, who is to bring the morning, lest coming suddenly He find us sleeping. What time is here referred to? Not to the revelation of Christ in the clouds of heaven to find a people asleep. No; but to His return from His ministration in the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary, when He lays off His priestly attire and clothes Himself with garments of vengeance, and when the mandate goes forth: “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still; and he that is holy, let him be holy still.”

Jesus tells us to watch for the day He will leave the Most Holy Place, so, someday He will let us know when and how to do this.

There is much rejoicing at the Feast of Tabernacles, when the judgment day is past.  They enjoyed making their dwellings of branches, which was to remind them of their wilderness journey.

     Leviticus 23:34

Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the LORD.

     Leviticus 23:35

On the first day shall be an holy convocation: Ye shall do no servile work therein.

     Leviticus 23:36

Seven days ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: on the eighth day shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD: it is a solemn assembly; and ye shall do no servile work therein.

      Zechariah 14:12

And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.

      Zechariah 14:16

And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.

     Zechariah 14:17

And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain.

      Zechariah 14:18

And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.

      Zechariah 14:19

This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.

The Lord is saying in Zechariah, that the people who do not keep the feast of Tabernacles will not receive the latter rain, and they will suffer in the plagues.

       Patriarchs and Prophets   PG  541

The Feast of Tabernacles was not only commemorative but typical. It not only pointed back to the wilderness sojourn, but, as the feast of harvest, it celebrated the ingathering of the fruits of the earth, and pointed forward to the great day of final ingathering, when the Lord of the harvest shall send forth His reapers to gather the tares together in bundles for the fire, and to gather the wheat into His garner. At that time the wicked will all be destroyed. They will become “as though they had not been.”Obadiah 16. And every voice in the whole universe will unite in joyful praise to God. Says the revelator, “Every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb forever and ever.”   Revelation 5:13.

In each of these two chapters of Leviticus 23, and Zechariah 14, the Lord mentions the feast of Tabernacles three times.  When something is said by God three times we better open our eyes and take note of what He is showing us.

   Part Five

      The Upward Look   PG  232

The history of the children of Israel is written for our admonition and instruction upon whom the ends of the world are come. Those who would stand firm in the faith in these last days, and finally gain an entrance into the heavenly Canaan, must listen to the words of warning spoken by Jesus Christ to the Israelites. These lessons were given to the church in the wilderness to be studied and heeded by God’s people throughout their generations forever. The experience of the people of God in the wilderness will be the experience of His people in this age. Truth is a safeguard in all time to those who will hold fast the faith once delivered to the saints.

–Manuscript 110, Aug. 6, 1899,

     The Upward Look  PG  232

It is impossible to enumerate the advantages the Lord prepared for the world in making the Jewish nation the repository of His rich treasures of knowledge. They were the subjects of His special favor.  As a people who knew and worshiped the true God, they were to communicate the principles of His kingdom. They were instructed by the Lord. He withheld from them nothing favorable to the formation of characters which would make them fit representatives of His kingdom.

Their feasts, the Passover, the Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles, and the ceremonies attending these gatherings, were to proclaim the truths that God had entrusted to His people. At these gatherings the people were to show gladness and joy, expressing their thanksgiving for their privileges and the gracious treatment of their Lord. Thus they were to show to a world that knew not God that the Lord does not forsake those who trust in Him. With joyful voices they were to sing, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God” (Ps. 43:5)

The Great Controversy p 488

The subject of the sanctuary and the investigative judgment should be clearly understood by the people of God. All need a knowledge for themselves of the position and work of their great High Priest. Otherwise it will be impossible for them to exercise the faith which is essential at this time or to occupy the position which God designs them to fill. Every individual has a soul to save or to lose. Each has a case pending at the bar of God. Each must meet the great Judge face to face. How important, then, that every mind contemplate often the solemn scene when the judgment shall sit and the books shall be opened, when, with Daniel, every individual must stand in his lot, at the end of the day.
